SOUTHBAY PAVILION SEEKS TO IMPROVE FINANCIAL LITERACY IN THE COMMUNITY AT ITS 2ND ANNUAL COOL KIDS SAVE EVENT

March 29, 2016 (Carson, Calif.) –  SouthBay Pavilion mall will host the 2nd Annual Cool Kids Save on Saturday, April 16, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in celebration of Financial Literacy Month . This event is designed to teach and encourage children and teens (aka “COOL KIDS”) the importance of learning to manage money wisely and responsible financial planning through live entertainment, games, contests, fun activities and give-a-ways. This event would not be possible without the partnership of the Carson and Kayumanggi Lions Clubs, Councilmember Elito Santarina, Maxx Promos and The Filipino Community of Carson.

76% of American families live paycheck to paycheck, 50% of Americans have less than three (3) months’ worth of expenses saved (The National Foundation for Credit Counseling) and only 33% of parents talk to their kids about money regularly (jumpstart.org). SouthBay Pavilion hopes to inspire and motivate parents to set an example and teach COOL KIDS the basics of earning, spending and saving.  Additionally, resources will be available for parents to help COOL KIDS understand the principles of donations and investments.

The event will feature The Money Mammals, with their interactive multimedia show featuring puppets of the award-winning DVD, “Saving Money is Fun”, who will entertain and educate parents and COOL KIDS. This show will highlight the value of needs versus wants, and provide informational tools for parents to have continuing conversations at home about financial literacy.

The first 200 pre-registered COOL KIDS to check-in at the event will receive a pouch with pretend money (cool bucks). Participants will use their cool bucks to buy activity tickets. Activities include balloon art, face painting, glitter tattoos, hair bling, wax hands and more. Additional cool bucks can be earned by completing crafts at the arts & crafts work station.

COOL KIDS will learn that money is essential to buying things and/or services and they will be given an opportunity to experience first-hand working to earn cool bucks. SouthBay Pavilion hopes to teach COOL KIDS how to make sound choices with the allotted cool bucks provided to (or earned) by them.

In addition, a poster contest entitled “I AM A MONEY MAKER” will be open to all students in LA County - 3rd to 12th grades. The posters will be judged on their expression of theme, content and creativity. Winners in each category will receive a $100 gift card and runners up will receive special prizes. All winners will be recognized at the Cool Kids Save main event on Saturday, April 16th from 3pm – 7pm.  This event promises to be filled with family fun entertainment, giveaways and raffle items.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information visit www.southbaypavilion.com/cool-kids.
