FIRST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING CHESS TOURNAMENT

Launching available board games for rent at the Guest Services Desk 

Carson, CA (November 18, 2010) – On Saturday, November 27th 2010 at 10am, SouthBay Pavilion Mall, located at 20700 Avalon Blvd., Carson, CA will be featuring a Thanksgiving Chess Tournament hosted by the Carson Chess Club.

The Carson Chess club is composed of nearly 30 members. Initially founded about 10 years ago, by President Bert Guartez, the group began meeting at a local 7/11 convenience store to play chess in the parking lot. The group has since gained more exposure by competing in a variety of tournaments. They currently meet at various locations such as the Carson’s Carriage Crest Park as well the Veteran’s Park of Carson. Traditionally, the club attends the Veterans Park the weekend of June 12th in celebration of the Filipino Independence Day.

 The event on November 27th will begin with an open registration from 10am-10:30am. This includes walk-on players. No entry fee is required. There will be 3 categories of competition: 1800 up, 1800 below, and casual. 5 competitors qualifying for the next round. The event will be concluded by 15 champions. Trophies and SouthBay Pavilion gift certificates of up to $50 will be awarded. 

The chess tournament event will launch a new program at the SouthBay Pavilion mall. Beginning the week of November 28th, there will be board games available for check out at the customer service desk.
